So here at Sleep Earthed, because we make ourselves very approachable by e mail and phone, we get lots of questions about Earthing and our UK Manufactured Certified Organic Earthing Bed Sheets, Pillow Cases and Meditation Mats.
Earthing Newbies want quality real accurate information and they are very susceptible to picking up poor and inaccurate info from flashy websites, who really don’t have a clue about their products or how to really use them properly.
Right – No more waffle – Let’s dive right in and explore the top 20 questions and following on are our answers. The short answer will be below but detailed answers are at the bottom of the page…….

No you can’t – This will coat the silver in the sheets and degrade it’s effectiveness.

Number 1. Can I put a sheet over the top of my Earthing Sheet ?
100% No You Can’t ! So many people think you can !
By putting a sheet over the top of an earthing half sheet or fully fitted sheet you are insulating yourself from the earthing sheet. Same goes with pillowcases too actually. Effectively you’ve created a barrier between your body and the silver threads in the sheet. For Earthing to work for you, you need to have skin contact with the actual earthing sheet material and silver threads. 90% of the callers to Sleep Earthed who say their Earthing Sheet isn’t working or they don’t feel any different after a few weeks, have actually made this rather simple error and covered their Earthing Bed Sheet with another non conductive bedsheet. Some websites out there will tell you this is fine – It isn’t and if you do this you are wasting your hard earned money.
Number 2. Do I have the socket switch on or off ? 
Leave it off ( actually it doesn’t matter ) As per the picture above – the two plastic pins do not conduct electricity, so the only connection to your wall socket is actually the Earth itself. The Bed Sheet or Pillowcase / Meditation mat uses Zero Power too so its 100% free to run in your home. Totally energy efficient !
Number 3. I’ve had the sheet a week and nothing has happened ?
You need to give it longer – Some individuals like insomniacs take longer to adjust.
In today’s society we just expect things to be 100% immediate. Headache – Take two Nurofen and it goes away. Need something fast – Amazon…… Sadly with Earthing or grounding, your body regulates how long it will take for it to work. For some people it’s really quick and these are the lucky people who write us nice kind reviews, as generally they are amazed that they are getting some good sleep or pain relief now. But the ones who call or message us after just a week of using the products, tend to be clients who have been sleeping very badly for many many years. Sadly for this group of people any benefits from Earthing the body are going to take a long time to manifest themselves. Certainly just a week is way too short of a time period to see any changes. One of our staff here came to see me after a month of having a fitted sheet and said his wife was sleeping like a log now and he was just laying awake waiting for the epiphany to happen. Oh dear ! Once I explained that it will happen, but you can’t control when it will be, so just chill out – keep using the sheet and all will be well. A few weeks late he was sleeping really well. Number 4. I think my sheet is faulty and its only a few weeks old !
It surely wont be – We test them before they leave the factory.
All the bedsheets, pillowcases and Meditation mats we make, are thoroughly tested during production and prior to dispatch to make sure they are working 100%. As they use ZERO POWER and are just connected to the Earth connection in your home. In fact, it’s simple connection from the ground in your home directly to your bedsheet. As they use zero power there isn’t a little green LED saying “hello I’m working” for you to check. We’ve been asked on many occasions why we don’t have an “ON indicator” on our products and we have to explain that Earthing doesn’t work like that. Now there are some people with Digital Volt Meters out there and they’ve seen a few amazing videos on you tube. These guys really want to test the sheet to see if it’s working. No problems go ahead, but we test each and every product for Resistance / Continuity before it leaves us so you don’t need to. Number 5. I have a pacemaker, Is it safe to use ?
Yes it is safe, but if in doubt ask your GP who almost certainly won’t have a clue about earthing because it doesn’t involve BIG PHARMA.
But in all seriousness, you have to think of Earthing or Grounding being as safe as standing on the grass outside your house barefoot. So if you consider it in this way, the fact you take prescription drugs, have had a new hip or even have had a pacemaker fitted, will make zero difference to your wellbeing improvements by Earthing your body. The point here is earthing is very safe. Millions of people do it every day and night around the world and by the way – If you take your dog out for a walk guess what – They are doing it too ! That’s why walking barefoot on a beach, taking a swim in the sea or in a park feels so good for you. There is a lot of Earthing and Grounding misinformation out there, so as the companies qualified electrical engineer ( Steve ), I can tell you this is as safe as any product gets. Just because you read something disturbing on a lovely swish so called medical website, doesn’t make it true – If you start with that premise you can’t go too far wrong……
Number 6. My Girlfriend is pregnant – Is it safe for her and my other kids ?
Yes it is safe. In fact it’s as safe as walking barefoot on the beach or sleeping on the grass outside.
This is one of the most important questions we are asked and honestly as above, using our bedding products is a safe as standing on the grass outside and getting soaked by your dad with the sprinkler….. Maybe not as much fun though……
Number 7. Which hole in the plug to I plug my Earthing Cable in ?
All our plugs are designed to take in 2 x earthing leads. We have also been asked where is the earth connection on the EU plug and it’s at the side of the round part of the plug itself. The Live and Neutral pins are plastic and so no energy is used by the Earthing sheet at all.
Number 8. Can I plug my earthing plug into an extension lead ? This is simple – Yes you can !
Number 9. Can I use the bedsheet with an electric blanket ?
Yes you can ! But if you feel any tingling at all when in bed, get the electric blanket checked.
Its quite safe to put the electric blanket under an earthing sheet. As you have electricity running through the blanket to heat it up, if the blanket is at all old and you feel some tingling, then we would recommend you get the electric blanket checked by a qualified electrician. The tingling is an indication that the sheet is conducting away electricity down to the earth, which is exactly what it should do. In fact is like an early warning system that there is an issue with your blanket.
Number 10. Can I wear Pyjamas in bed with the Earthing Sheet ?
You do need some skin contact directly with the sheet and the more the better really, otherwise there is little benefit.
On occasions we do have clients who tell us that they wear full PJ’s, gloves, socks and a balaclava in bed to stay warm ! Whilst this is great for keeping cosy, when it comes to earthing or grounding yourself through the earthing sheet, this is somewhat of a problem. If this is you, then you really have just three choices. 1) Don’t get an earthing sheet, as with lots of clothes on you won’t be earthing yourself. 2) Lose some of the clothes, switch to sleep shorts and a tee shirt maybe. 3) Just get a pillowcase, as you rarely cover your head when you sleep.
Number 11. What should I buy, I’m confused ?

Number 12. How much silver thread is in your sheets ?
Well it’s around 5% but read more for a better explanation.
So the little black lines on the Organic Cotton Sheet above, are the silver threads. But you need to know more about this, as if they were pure silver threads they would snap in the washing machine and the sheet would be rendered useless pretty much straight away. The silver threads are actually strands of nylon coated in silver. This is how everyone does it and it’s very effective. The silver is conductive and this is what gives you effectively an earthing grid to lay on and get some well deserved sleep. We argue that you would get no more earthing benefit if the sheet was 100% made of silver, as you are still connected to the earth no mater how much silver is in there. So this isn’t a great discussion point for us. As the companies Qualified Electrical Engineer, I can 100% tell you this is true.
Number 13. How do I wash my earthing sheet ?
We recommend Canadian Manufactured TruEarth Washing Strips.
We get asked a fair amount about this online and when people order over the phone too. What products should we use to wash our Earthing Bed Sheets ? Well we know that there are some types of washing products that should be avoided, so lets examine those first. You should 100% avoid products which have Bio in the name and in reality even the Non Bio ones are pretty aggressive towards the silver threads in the sheets. Best to avoid these types of products, as they will affect the silver threads in the bed sheet or pillow case as they cause oxidisation and damage to the conductivity / earthing properties of the sheet. The bedsheets life can be extended by using the right washing detergents and for our money TRUEARTH products tick all the boxes here – No Plastic bottles to landfill and the whole product is fine for nature. Plus the outer is biodegradable cardboard. By using aggressive cleaning / washing products you will reduce the working life of your sheet. Even so called “Eco” products are not as kind to the silver as they could be. Final thing – No Fabric Conditioner too as this coats the silver and makes it eventually non conductive. Number 14. Is it safe for pets ?
Yes it is – You just have to keep the leads tucked away so they can’t eat them.
In reality pets love earthing. As you can see from the above, this is a very confused dog as he is only 1/2 grounded. Actually he is all grounded. But in all seriousness, the number of clients who buy an earthing meditation sheet for their Dog or Cat is huge. It also helps them as it does with Humans, to reduce inflammation, so if your pet is getting on a bit, this can most definitely help. Number 15. How are Sleep Earthed Sheets different ?
Well we manufacture them here in the UK with UK People and the quality is exceptional.
We get asked if we make them here in the UK and the answer is yes we do – Above is Linda our Head Seamstress and there is literally nothing she can’t make – She’s an absolute legend ! All of the other sellers out there buy their sheets from China and that’s a bit of a shame, so we decided that as we already had the technology, the people and the machinery to make the product here in rural Herefordshire, we should do exactly that. It’s the only factory you will ever see that’s got carpet on the floor too ! We do this so as the area is exceptionally clean and very tidy, so nothing gets your sheets and pillowcases dirty during production. within the packaging we use, which is biodegradable by the way, is a leaflet advising you to quick wash the products before use. Why do we do this ? Well its been through the factory and on occasions, there may be very tiny trace elements of sewing machine oil on the threads. Some very very sensitive clients tell us they can detect this oil with their noses. So a 15 minute quick wash is the easy solution to this. We are super proud of our Unique Selling Point below and again we manufacture the sheet in our own factory in the UK. We don’t just sew labels in as some competitors have claimed, we make the whole product from start to finish – Hand Made. Plus we test it too at the beginning and end of the production cycle so you don’t have to.
Number 16. Do I need a plug with a pillowcase ?
Yes if you use it on its own – No if you are putting it on top of an existing earthing sheet.
So to be 100% clear – If you are using the pillowcase on its own, then you need a plug and cable. All our plugs can accept two earthing cables into them.
- So if you are using in the bedroom, just one pillowcase, you need also one cable and one plug too.
- If you have two pillowcases then you need to earth both of them. In this case you need two pillows, two leads and one plug
- If you have an earthing bed sheet already and you want to have pillows on top of this sheet, then you don’t need to earth the pillowcases. Why ? Well they will become earthed by putting them on top of the already earthed Earthing sheet.
Also every Earthing lead has a 100K Ohm ( 100 thousand Ohm ) safety resistor built into the lead. All manufacturers world wide do this and it’s a safety measure and protects you the user against two main things.
- A lightening strike on your home ( highly unlikely )
- A live to earth fault at your home
As your sheet is connected to the earth outside your home it needs to be protected and we do that for you with this safety resistor.
How many plugs do I need for two pillowcases ?
If you have two pillowcases, then you need to earth both of them if they are not already on an earthing sheet. In this case you need two pillows, two leads and one plug.
Can I use a 1/2 sheet and a pillow case together ?
We advise no, but read on to find out why.
This one was a complete revelation to us, but we’ve had a few clients purchase this combo and a few have reported that they get a kind of electrical buzzing or slight vibration feeling when using the items together. What’s happening is because you are earthing both the Pillowcase and the Half Sheet separately via cables and plugs, then the link between the two is actually your body. In some way, this for some people causes and Earthing Loop to be created. To avoid this we suggest you just have one of the two items and use them separately or get a fully fitted sheet. Just to be clear we’ve only seen this a few times, but we know its possible to get this reaction to this pairing of products.
Where are your bedsheets made ?

Can I use fabric conditioner when washing the products ?
No you can’t – This will coat the silver in the sheets and degrade it’s effectiveness.
From our knowledge of the bedsheet and pillowcase material, the silver threads can be damaged by either aggressive washing powders or fabric conditioners. So when washing the sheets its important not to use BIO washing powders or any fabric conditioners either as this will reduce the working life of the product. If washed regularly with the right cleaning product, you should be able to get around 2 years life use out of the products. The silver over a period of time does degrade and become non conductive. At this point you will tend to feel that you are not sleeping as well as before and a replacement sheet will need to be acquired. This is the same for all Earthing bed sheets. But as an earthing convert myself, you will never go back to sleeping on normal cotton sheets after you’ve slept on an Earthing Bed Sheet.
