Earthing Mats are one of our most popular products here at Sleep Earthed, but although they are super simple to use, many people ask us questions about them.
Detailed below are the TOP 10 Questions we are asked along with the answers, which we hope will help you understand how they work and how to use them.
Its important to be aware that with a Mat, although you are Earthed or Grounded, you get more effective Earthing from a bedsheet. This is because it’s unlikely you will be able to stay connected to a Mat for 7-8 hours as day. With a Bedsheet that the easiest way to remain earthed for a longer period of time.
So here are the TOP 10 Earthing Mat Questions we are asked in no particular order.
- Which side of the Earthing Mat do I use ?
- How long can I use the Mat for ?
- Do I need to use it with bare feet ?
- Can I use it in bed ?
- Is the lead the same as the Sleep Earthed Bedsheet lead ?
- What is the warranty on the Mat ?
- How does the Mat work ?
- Is the Earthing Mat better than an Earthing Sheet ?
- How do I test that the Mat is working ? It doesn’t have any LED’s on it ?
- Should I feel anything when using the Mat ?
1. Which side of the Mat do I use ?
The side to use the the side that the cable plugs in to. The other side of the Mat is non conductive, so don’t use that side.
2. How long can I use the mat for ?
You can us the Mat for as long as you wish – There are no maximum or minimum limits to being Earthed or Grounded. The more you use it the more benefit you get, as its like walking or laying on the grass outside your home.
3. Do I need to use it with bare feet ?
If you are using the Mat, you need skin contact and if you are standing, sitting or using with with a keyboard, you need to touch the Mat with your bare skin. Wearing socks or other garments forms an insolating barrier so that’s a real no-no…..
4. Can I use it in bed ?
You can and some people do, but we really would not recommend it. Why ? Well its simply not that nice to sleep on. Its a leatherette material impregnated with carbon and this is the part that gives you the conductivity that earthing requires.
5. Is the lead the same as the Sleep Earthed Bedsheet lead ?
Yes its the same lead we use on both the bedsheets and the Mats. It’s 4m long so you get lots of cable to ensure it reached your wall socket.
6. What is the warranty on the Mat ?
Here at Sleep Earthed we warranty the product for a minimum of 12 months from purchase. But there is literally nothing to go wrong with the Earthing Mat at all, so its likely you will get a many many years of earthing out of it without issue.
7. How does the Mat work ?
So cutting through the mumbo jumbo on this, the Mat is connected via a cable to a wall socket. We offer 3 options here – UK, EU and a USA style plug when you order.
Simply speaking you are connecting the Mat only to the Earth pin in the socket or extension lead you plug into.
- So the Earthing Plug is in the wall.
- The socket in the wall is connected all the way through your home to what’s called a distribution board, which holds all your circuit breakers for the home.
- Then using your homes Earthing cable network behind your your walls, it goes outside of your home and eventually comes into contact with the Physical Earth outside your home. This is how your Earthing Mat is finding the Ground or Earth somewhere outside your home.
- From there, this wiring allows free electrons to pass up the cable and into your body. These counter the positive electrons and give you the Earthing benefits you need.
8. Is the Earthing Mat better than an Earthing Sheet ?
We think there is a place for both, but if we were to choose it would be the Earthing Bed Sheet every time. Why ? because you can easily spend 6-8 hours in bed fully connected to the sheet, but 6 to 8 hours on a Mat is pretty impossible to do, as we humans tend to move around rather than staying in one place all day. The only time we are relatively stationary is in bed – That’s our logic.
9. How do I test that the Mat is working ? It doesn’t have any LED’s on it ?
As Earthing products use Zero Power there can be no “LED” showing you if its on or off. LED’s or on/off indictors require power and the really good news is this product is 100% free to run as it uses ZERO electricity.
10. Should I feel anything when using the Mat ?
99.9% of the time the answer will always be no, you should not feel anything at all. But there is an exception ! If you use a mobile / tablet in bed and its on charge, the electrical energy on the metal case of the device has a voltage on it. The Earthing Mat or Bedsheet if you also have one, will conduct this charge / power away from your phone and down to the ground via the Mat or Sheet. This is quite safe, but you may feel a slight tingling sensation. Its more annoying than uncomfortable, so we recommend that you either don’t use them on charge or have a case on the device. Most people protect their devices with cases, so this is usually fine and solves the issue. Occasionally people do have dimming lamps, that you touch to adjust the light output from them. This can also give you a tingling sensation if you are on an earthing products and touch the lamp.
Why we add a Safety Resistor into the leads of all our products……
We are asked about this many times by clients who believe the cable of their product is in some way faulty.
All our cables are 100% tested before they leave us and it’s just an item that doesn’t go wrong at all.
They think the cable has either a very high resistance, or they think its broken as they cant see any conductivity in the lead ?
Well it’s really simple answer to this query…………
We add in a 100 Kilo Ohm Resistor into the cable and we do this for a very good reason….. That’s 100,000 Ohms of safety resistance for you.
In the remote chance your home was hit by lightening and its incredibly remote, the safety resistor would prevent any power from the strike reaching you when using an Earthing Mat or a Earthing Bed Sheet.
So if you are a budding DIY electrician, please if you absolutely feel you must test the lead, use the 200K Ohm range on your meter. Then you will see it will read 100K Ohm’s.
We do have a complete testing guide here for more information, but don’t worry about that, because we test the products fully before you receive them so you don’t have to.
